This upgrade priority list is the featured spend guide for Drive Thru Empire. The goal is simple: every tap of cash should reduce a bottleneck or unlock a multiplier. Vanity can wait. If you are still learning the loop, skim Getting Started first, then return here before each big shopping spree.

S-tier: buy these first

1. Service speed and crew (drive-thru core)

Ordering counters, kitchen speed (Express Kitchen when available), and order crew hires directly cut wait times. Cars that leave unhappy—or never pay—are dead income. While you are still tapping burgers, fries, shakes, and coffee, speed upgrades beat decorative props every time.

2. Safe-O-Matic and collection automation

Safe-O-Matic systems automate cash collection so you are not babysitting every register. Automation is the difference between a true idle tycoon and a sticky tapper. Prioritize covering your active businesses before chasing a new façade. Offline earnings only matter if the pipeline can hold and collect value—player reports of offline bugs make solid automation even more important (see tips).

3. Traffic, roads, signage, and visitor magnetism

Throughput without cars is useless; cars without throughput create queues. After the worst wait-time node is fixed, invest in road and signage upgrades that raise visitor flow along Route 66. These scale every business you already own.

4. Star milestones that unlock the next business

Stars gate side businesses. When you are one Star stack away from motel, restroom, EV, or store progress, divert enough play to claim that milestone—then immediately fund the new stop’s speed/automation staples. Do not sit on Stars while your only open business is capped.

A-tier: strong after the basics

Workshop cards (Crystals and Hammers)

At key levels you earn Crystals and Hammers to upgrade Workshop cards for global bonuses. Prefer cards that raise income, speed, or offline potency over novelty effects. Card systems expanded in mid-2025 patches—when new cards appear in version history, re-rank them against raw cash upgrades.

Business-specific speed nodes

Fast Check-In (motel), Turbo Cleaning (restroom), and equivalent EV/store speed nodes become S-tier for that building once it is open. Until the building exists, ignore them—follow business order.

Storage / capacity style upgrades

If a upgrade raises how much offline or peak cash you can bank before capping, take it after collection automation. Capacity without Safe-O-Matic still leaves money stranded.

B-tier: fine when you are not gated

• Comfort UI / quality-of-life purchases that do not change math
• Mild cosmetic or theming spends after a Prestige when multipliers make cash trivial
• Small gem impulse buys for a single stuck node—only if you already understand gem scarcity (many reviewers complain gems feel shallow; read review)

C-tier / last

• Stacking décor while cars still queue for minutes
• Buying every shop popup “special” without reading the IAP guide
• Hoarding cash for no reason when an S-tier node is affordable
• Chasing fake gift codes instead of upgrading—see codes and how to redeem

Prestige-aware spending

Before a Prestige reset, stop dumping cash into upgrades you are about to wipe unless they help you hit the Prestige button faster this run. Permanent multipliers from Prestige change how quickly you replay early S-tier nodes. Use prestige plus the prestige checklist so you do not soft-reset mid-Workshop breakthrough.

After Prestige, rush the same S-tier path: speed → Safe-O-Matic → traffic → Stars. Your muscle memory should be boring and effective.

Sample session checklist

1. Collect offline pile; note if anything looks buggy.
2. Identify the longest wait or unpaid queue on screen.
3. Buy the cheapest upgrade that fixes that node.
4. Confirm Safe-O-Matic coverage on open businesses.
5. Check Star progress toward the next roadside unlock.
6. Spend spare Crystals/Hammers in the Workshop.
7. Only then glance at shop packs—or close the popup and keep playing.

Victor Steele events and upgrades

Victor Steele pressure and sabotage events are part of the fantasy. Surviving them is easier when your plaza is automated and fast—not when you spent the afternoon on C-tier décor. Keep a cash buffer if events temporarily suppress income, then return to the S-tier path.
